IPMM 89: The Sword, the Crown, and the Unspeakable Power, Episode 1 (Intro Session)

“Meet the Fuckers”

It’s time to get to know the characters!  For this game, we’ve got:

  • Elle as Tal, the Hex
  • Yanni as We, the Beloved
  • Duncan as Quinn, the Gauntlet
  • Joanna as Lamb, the Bloodletter
  • Will as Rook, the Spur
  • Caitlin as Fellow, the Voice
  • … and D as the MC

This is the first session, after character and world creation.  It’s a slice of day-in-the-life, using a technique D cribbed from Todd Nicholas and Megan Pedersen’s Time Cellist – have each character run into the next in an organic sort of way (it mostly worked).  There’s not a lot of rolling; you’ll have to wait for Episode 2 to see the mechanics really engage.

IPMM 88: The Sword, the Crown, and the Unspeakable Power (World and Character Creation)

“‘Are there dragons or gods?’ … ‘Yes.'”

We’ve got a special treat for you today!  Todd Nicholas and Tom Josephsohn of the Jank Cast have written a dark political fantasy game using the Apocalypse World engine, called The Sword, the Crown, and the Unspeakable Power (“SCUP” for short).  And we have been fortunate enough to be given permission to do a world premiere AP of the game, which is very nearly ready for release!  We will also have a review and an interview with the creators after we’re done with the season, which we expect to be 7-10 episodes.

We know that Vincent Baker is also currently working on a Game of Thrones-inspired Powered by the Apocalypse game, Apocalypse World: Dark Age.  We feel that there is plenty of room for both in the community, and there are elements of SCUP that are very unique and make this a really amazing and stand-out game.

Our initial session was over four hours; we’ve split it into two episodes.  This is the first, and covers world and character creation.  World creation in SCUP is one of the most interesting and novel parts of the game and we wanted to make sure we did due diligence with it.  We hope you thoroughly enjoy this brand new, world premiere AP!

IPMM 87: Bonus – Build-Your-Own Magic Draft

“What I try to do in Pokemon games is never have a Mr. Mime.”

In this episode, we talk about the build-your-own Magic: The Gathering draft that’s going on at the local game store (and run by guest host Blake Mutschler).  We also talk about various other gaming topics.  This is a short one, but we’re about to start a massive AP of a brand new game, so stay tuned!

IPMM 86: Bleed

“I wanna bleed as much as possible.”

In this episode, we discuss bleed – how we let our characters’ experiences in our games affect our own emotions.  We talk about why we like it, how we achieve it, and what we can do to make gaming a safe experience when there is a lot of bleed.

Note: the effect Caitlin is talking about is actually the McCollough Effect. (We got close!)

IPMM 84: AW New Sodom, FINALE!

“…and I feel fine.”

This is it, folks. The episode where all the loose ends get tied up, all the mysteries are solved, and everyone lives happily ever after.

*snrk*

Seriously, though, this is Apocalypse World.  Everything’s gonna go to bloody hell in a handbasket.  What did you expect, anyway?

IPMM 83: Bonus Episode – Nick Cage, Impostor Syndrome

“Do you even knit, bro?”

This is another potpurri episode.  Our mic cable was busted so we recorded on my laptop; the sound quality is not great but we promise you’ll still be entertained!

IPMM 82: Story Time – Delve Night, Part 1

Code word: #pizzanewspaperswerve

Blake and Highcove are back with stories from Delve Night, their series of open, one-shot encounters at the game store inspired by a similar (but short-lived) program by Wizards of the Coast.  The hosts talk about how their version of Delve Night started and what they learned about cooperative GMing and encounter design.

We’ve also added a new feature to Story Time. Each episode, the hosts will introduce a new hashtag they’ve invented. Use it in your Twitter, G+, and Facebook posts, and we’ll see if it catches on!
