“‘Are there dragons or gods?’ … ‘Yes.'”
We’ve got a special treat for you today! Todd Nicholas and Tom Josephsohn of the Jank Cast have written a dark political fantasy game using the Apocalypse World engine, called The Sword, the Crown, and the Unspeakable Power (“SCUP” for short). And we have been fortunate enough to be given permission to do a world premiere AP of the game, which is very nearly ready for release! We will also have a review and an interview with the creators after we’re done with the season, which we expect to be 7-10 episodes.
We know that Vincent Baker is also currently working on a Game of Thrones-inspired Powered by the Apocalypse game, Apocalypse World: Dark Age. We feel that there is plenty of room for both in the community, and there are elements of SCUP that are very unique and make this a really amazing and stand-out game.
Our initial session was over four hours; we’ve split it into two episodes. This is the first, and covers world and character creation. World creation in SCUP is one of the most interesting and novel parts of the game and we wanted to make sure we did due diligence with it. We hope you thoroughly enjoy this brand new, world premiere AP!
I’m eager for this game to come out! I’ve talked just a little bit with Todd and it’s going to do some exciting things that I wish I’d thought of.
What? You’re splitting it up?!
IPMM joins the ranks of the money-hungry folks that brought you Harry Potter/Twilight/Hobbit/HungerGames. What’s next, a Story Time they break into 6 parts (wait, that may have already happened)?

… Except, you know, it’s free and all.
But seriously, great opening episode for this AP. Can’t wait to hear more!
Glad you’re excited!
Two things:
1. this is gonna be 30 hours of AP. I’m sure you don’t want to digest that all in one sitting (and I sure as hell don’t want to edit it that way).
B) the holidays wrecked our backlog – splitting episodes is the only way I can build that back up that doesn’t involve slowing our release schedule.
III: if you know anyone who would pay us to release shows, we would be happy to hear it :p
Thirty hours of IPMM podcasting? That’s approaching about half of my tolerance level.
In all honesty though, I was just giving you a hard time. I’d personally much rather have new things to listen to regularly. Plus, I enjoy the anticipation!
That being said, I see that the second SCUP was already posted a couple days after my (fake) rant. You folks are far too kind to us 🙂
The World/Myth creation stuff reminded me a of In A Wicked Age and Fiasco. Cool stuff; can’t wait to listen to more.
