“Pokemon is clearly the aftermath of a global, apocalyptic war.”
In this episode, Dave, Yanni, and Duncan talk about how to evoke fear (and other emotions) in games and the challenge of transitioning between the GM and player roles.
Stuff we mention:
“… and I feel fine”
This is it – the finale of the second and final season of Apocalypse World: Sunktown.
Two battles rage, one on the ground and one deep in the Malestrom. Betrayal lurks around every corner. Eliza can save everything – if the other PCs can hold off the Mountain King’s army for long enough. Can she succeed?
Can the PCs survive and save everyone they care about?
Tune in and see!
This is Part 1 of the two-part Season 2 finale.
Ricarra summons all of Tum Tum and settles things for good in Skull Head. Siddiq goes after Rice.
The plot thickens in Sunktown — can Eliza save the world before the Mountain King ruins everything?
“Never Trust the French”
Shazza decides to add Twice to his collection. Big Fucker deals with the fallout of Three’s mistake. Boo saves Mox’s little brother. Eliza figures out how to save the world (maybe). Everyone plays politics.
Much is foreshadowed.
“It’s like waking up with a raccoon clawing at your face.”
Yanni starts by plugging a couple of new games. Then we talk about bad endings, bad plots, inconsistencies, and stuff that just irks us in TV shows and movies. Stuff referenced in this episode:
“Tell us about the time you cross-bred peacocks and elephants…”
In this episode, we take a break from Apocalypse World to play The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen, a spectacular story game that predates most story games – even if you don’t believe it’s as old as it claims to be.
The game involves telling tall tales, drinking, and the occasional duel.
It’s delightfully silly. Enjoy!
“On fire and covered in brains”
In which we watch Found’s funeral and discover that just because a PC is dead doesn’t mean he can’t still fuck with everyone. (Fortunately, that means Big Fucker still gets his pitbull bonus.)
Rules note: in the later episodes of Season 2, we misinterpret the wealth move. We treat it like fortunes in the sense that the player earns the barter on a hit. After the fact, we discovered that it actually only provides wealth for the duration of the session in which you hit. It doesn’t really affect the story, but it’s worth noting that we did screw that up.
“A Death in the Family”
Boo shows us her dark side. Found’s plan finally comes to fruition (or not). Big Fucker makes a difficult choice.
Sunktown will never be the same.
“You can play as Ophelia, but then it’s a pretty short book.”
Yanni mentions a fun kickstarter campaign. Dave goes on a feminist rant. Then we discuss good female characters in media and what makes a good character. Finally, Yanni brings up same-sex marriage and ultimately wins the evening.
Note: the cast of the cast is 100% supportive of LGBT rights and equality. Even when the context is humorous we take these issues very seriously, as they affect us and many people we care about.
Show notes – we got some stuff wrong; I’ve noted where below:
